Cats are better than dogs, and no, I will not be accepting any criticism so please only comment on this post if you agree with me. Cat people unite!
As someone who grew up around dogs, I never knew the true love of a cat until I adopted my first kitten, Tina, at the age of 10. When I initially laid eyes on her, I was immediately hooked by her adorable pink nose and her little white paws that looked like socks. I thought she was the most adorable thing, and begged and cried at the local shelter until I finally convinced my dad to call my mom and get her permission to let me bring Tina home. My mom, who is an avid dog person, was extremely skeptical, but I put up so much of a fight that my parents didn't know what else to do, so they let me adopt Tina.
At first, my love for Tina was the same as any little girl's love for a new kitten. I thought she was cute and I loved how soft her fur was. I hated when she scratched me and gagged at the smell of her cat food. Every day after school I would come home and look for her, and she would meow as I wrapped her up in a big hug. But, as months passed and Tina and I both grew into teenagers, we became like friends. She would wait for me to come home from school every day, laying patiently in the driveway, and would sit at my feet while I cooked dinner, hoping I tossed her the leftovers. Our routines became intertwined, and I could feel that she truly trusted me. It was remarkable. All I had ever known about cats was that they were mean and standoffish, and here I was, with a cat who always wanted to be around me and know what I was doing. She joined me for my morning coffee and would lay on my laptop keyboard whenever I tried to get work done. Tina did not necessarily want to be held or cuddled, she just wanted to be present, like a shadow. It was so amazing to have her by my side every day, and I could sense that her loyalty was special, as she didn't act the same towards visitors or even other people in my family
Eventually, Tina began to sense when I was sad or unhappy, which fortunately wasn't very often. I vividly remember one day over the summer I had a horrible day at work. I was a server at a golf course and had been harassed by several groups of players, which was fairly uncommon, but multiple instances simply happened to occur on the same day. I came home so distraught, probably more distraught than anyone in my family had ever seen me, and Tina somehow knew. Like I said, she wasn't always the most cuddly cat, but that day she came into my room and laid on top of me for hours, not moving once. Now, before you criticize me, I know that dogs are “a man's best friend” for this very reason. But I firmly believe that cats are unique because their trust truly has to be earned, which makes their love so much more rewarding. Most cats will hide when guests come over, and some will even hiss or bite, but that's just because you have to get to know them. Dogs are always super excited to see just about anyone, which is awesome, but it's not as special (at least, in my opinion).
Here are some more honorable mentions that I think make cats superior:
They are super smart animals.
From the day they're born they know where to use the bathroom, meaning you don't usually have to worry about potty training them.
They clean themselves, so there is less smell in the house!
They are super quiet, with no barking when strangers knock on the door.
No slobber!!!
They are generally pretty respectful creatures, not jumping on you or stealing your food (unless they're like my other cat, Maui, who steals cucumbers and pears from my kitchen counter. Aside from that she's great).
They have super cute purrs.
P.S. Don't bring your future kids to the animal shelter, because if they are anything like me they will lay on the floor crying until you agree to buy them a kitten. They will then form an alliance with said kitten that will lead to the adoption of two more. Soon, your entire family will be converted to cat lovers. This is a dangerous game.
Had a laugh reading this! I definitely think that cats are amazing but… dogs are still better! Coming from the owner of a small dog, I think my dog may have some cat tendencies though.
ReplyDeleteHi Karly, I really enjoyed reading your post! I also like cats more than dogs, just because they are usually more quiet and calm. I also always get afraid of getting bitten by a dog even though it has never happened.
ReplyDeleteAs a dog person this really made me see the appeal of a cat! Such a sweet story, I'm also a liability in the animal shelter, especially as a kid, I wanted to take them all home.
ReplyDeleteHi Karly! I loved your blog about cats~they truly are sweet creatures ♡ I really enjoyed your storytelling here about the temperament of your kitty Tina and how deep of a bond you formed. I'd love to learn more about if you have any tips about convincing a parent to get a cat...I know we're grown but my parents are still #TeamDog.
